What happens at a skin consultation?

A skin consultation is a calm, one-on-one chat where your therapist looks closely at your skin, asks about your concerns and routine, then maps out a plan built around you. It usually takes 30 to 45 minutes, there is no pressure to book anything, and every treatment we offer begins here.

Think of it as the starting point rather than a sales pitch. Your skin is personal, so the plan should be too. A good skin consultation is where we understand what you are dealing with, what you have tried, and what you would genuinely like to change, before we recommend a single thing.

Why every treatment starts with a consultation

We start with a consultation because no two faces are the same, and the wrong treatment on the right skin still gets you nowhere. Skin behaves differently depending on your history, your hormones, the products you use and the season.

For us it is also about honesty. Sometimes the best advice is to strengthen your skin barrier first, or to keep things gentle for a while before anything more active. Starting with a consultation lets Ann, Kirstie or Linda give you that advice properly, rather than guessing. If you want the bigger picture of a first appointment, our guide on what to expect at your first visit walks through it.

What your therapist will ask and look at

Expect a friendly conversation first, then a proper look at your skin in good light. We want to understand the whole picture, not just the surface, so the questions matter as much as the assessment.

Your therapist will usually cover:

  • Your main concerns, whether that is congestion, redness, pigmentation, texture or general dullness.
  • Your current routine, including cleansers, actives such as retinol or vitamin C, and any exfoliation.
  • Your skin history, past treatments, and how your skin tends to react.
  • Relevant health details, medications and any known sensitivities or allergies.
  • Sun exposure, lifestyle and what your mornings realistically allow.
  • What you would like to work towards, and over what sort of timeframe.

From there we assess your skin type and condition, note anything worth watching, and talk through the options that suit you. If something sits outside our scope, we will say so and point you to a GP or dermatologist. That honesty is the point.

What you walk away with

You leave with a clear, personalised plan and a genuine understanding of your skin, not a stack of products you did not ask for. Nothing is locked in on the day unless you are ready.

Your plan might suggest where to begin, roughly how many sessions a course could involve, and how treatments and homecare work together. Depending on your skin, we might talk about pHformula skin resurfacing, which is controlled resurfacing rather than a peel, or gentler options such as our custom hydration and nourishing facials. Results vary from person to person, so we frame everything as what a treatment is designed to help with, then adjust as your skin responds.

A typical first consultation

Imagine someone who books in frustrated with breakouts and uneven texture, having layered on strong actives from home in the hope of speeding things up. In the consultation we would talk through that routine, look closely at how the skin is coping, and often find the barrier is irritated and doing more harm than good.

Rather than jumping straight to resurfacing, the plan might start with calming and rebuilding the barrier for a few weeks, then reassess. It is slower on paper, kinder to the skin, and usually gets a better result. That is the sort of tailored, honest guidance a consultation is designed to give.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a skin consultation take?

Most consultations take around 30 to 45 minutes. That gives us time to talk through your concerns and routine properly, then assess your skin without rushing, so the plan we suggest genuinely fits you.

Do I have to book a treatment on the day?

No, there is never any pressure to book. A consultation is about understanding your skin and giving you honest advice. You are welcome to take your plan home, think it over, and book when you feel ready.

How should I prepare for my consultation?

Come with clean, product-free skin if you can, or simply as you are. It helps to know the products you currently use and any medications or sensitivities. Bringing your questions along is always a good idea too.

Is a consultation suitable for sensitive skin?

Yes, and it is especially useful for sensitive skin. We assess how your skin reacts and often recommend strengthening the barrier first, so anything we suggest is gentle, considered and designed to suit your skin.

Will you recommend pHformula at my consultation?

Only if it suits your skin and your goals. As the only clinic in Western Sydney to stock pHformula, we may discuss pHformula resurfacing, but plenty of plans start gentler. You can also explore all of our skin and beauty treatments.

Not sure where to start? Book a consultation and we will build a plan around your skin, at your pace. You are always welcome to talk to our team first if you have questions.
